Pearl on the Lower Rhine

Right on the Rhine, situated on the border with the Netherlands, Emmerich offers its visitors and around 30,000 inhabitants relaxing tranquillity in the typical Lower Rhine woodland and meadow landscape as well as attractive cultural and leisure opportunities. Even in the 14th century, Emmerich am Rhein was a member of the Rhine Hanse and achieved wealth and prestige through trade. Towards the end of the Second World War 97% of Emmerich was destroyed and some of it was rebuilt according to the old model. The proximity to the Rhine and the ships, the  promenade with beach chairs, a view of the longest suspension bridge in Germany, the cafés and restaurants, the conviviality and the vastness of the surroundings, but above all the people and their lifestyle, characterise the town.

Culturally, there are quite a few things to discover: mediaeval churches and their many treasures, the modern Heilig Geist church with its 'scrap crucifix', the Rhine Museum with more than 150 model ships and a museum garden, the 'PAN kunstforum niederrhein', an extensive cultural programme by the municipal theatre as well as museums and architectural monuments, such as Borghees manor house, the windmill at Möllenbölt, Drusus wells and STONE GATE.

In the resort of Elten the extensive views of the Rhine Valley from the 82m high Eltenberg Mountain and the historic atmosphere around the 1,000-year-old St Vitus church and the Drusus wells are fascinating.

Cycling enthusiasts will find ideal conditions on the level paths in the expanse of the Lower Rhine and the neighbouring Netherlands. On lengthy hikes you can relax in an intact and pristine river meadow landscape with fauna and flora rich in species.

The Hanse town of Emmerich am Rhein is pleased to be taking part in the 'Experience the Rhine Meadows' project together with its neighbouring communities and thus enabling its visitors to make the Rhine Meadow experience more fulfilling.
